This can be seen as an addendum to one of my previous posts, Columbus was a hack. After Columbus miraculously reached land, he was greeted by the Taino people and their chief. After they helped unload Columbus’s boats, they were greeted by Columbus with gifts to show he didn’t mean harm. He presented the Taino chief with a crimson cape as a gesture of good faith.
Being hospitable hosts, the chief presented Columbus in kind with a tiara of gold. But being from a European superpower, Columbus didn’t interpret this as a kind gesture; he interpreted it as the Tiano crowning him an almighty God-King. Thus began the Spanish conquest for gold in America, all because of a misinterpretation.
